International (Forat) -The United Kingdom has contributed an additional 10 million U.S. dollars to Sudan in humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a statement in Sudan.
The contribution is to enable aid agencies to deliver urgent and life-saving assistance to people in need, said United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a statement Sunday.
Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Ms. Marta Ruedas, praised Britain's supportive stance towards Sudanese humanitarian issues.
"In light of the significant funding gaps this year, the United Kingdom's second allocation is a testament to their commitment to the people of the Sudan and the humanitarian community alike, " she said in the statement.
"The CHF is a strategic funding tool which helps national and international non-governmental organizations respond to the most critical needs of the most vulnerable people in Sudan," she added.
Meanwhile, Head of the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) in Sudan, Joanna Reid, said that, "Humanitarian needs are substantial in Sudan, yet there are significant shortfalls in funding to address these needs.
"This additional contribution from the UK will enable humanitarian agencies to continue delivering life-saving humanitarian assistance, and to meet the needs of the most vulnerable people," she noted.
According to OCHA, 5.4 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance throughout Sudan.
However, the response plan addressing these humanitarian needs has only received 39 percent of the required funding.
This is the UK's second contribution to Sudan in 2015, having previously allocated 10.9 million dollars in December 2014./End/
